Pilot Valves for Pneumatic Applications
Small, low-wear & lightning-fast switching!

Safety

Our miniature valves are characterized by their extremely long service life, making them ideal for demanding pilot applications with high requirements for availability and reliability.

Accuracy & Repeatability

Our miniature valves can be configured precisely according to customer specifications. For example, switching times can be set very precisely and with very high repeatability.

System Integration

The compact design and cartridge valve construction are excellent for integration into higher-level systems or pneumatically operated process valves. Our miniature valves meet all the requirements for a compact and highly integrable pilot valve.

Efficiency

Compared to traditional valves, spider valves have lower moving masses and shorter distances to travel. As a result, the energy consumption is relatively low and the switching times are extremely short.

Pilot valves for pneumatic applications

Small, low-wear & lightning-fast!

Our pilot valves for pneumatic applications belong to the class of microvalves/miniature valves. They differ technologically from the so-called plunger valves by the special anchor design. The anchors used in these miniaturized valves are disc-shaped. This so-called plate anchor is pulled against the magnetic core assembly when activated. When the coil is deactivated, the form spring element connected to the plate anchor presses the seal on the spring-anchor assembly against the valve seat.

Thanks to the low mass of the anchor, these fast-switching valves achieve switching times in the millisecond range. The predominantly cartridge-connected valves have an almost frictionless anchor movement, allowing up to 4 billion switching cycles depending on the application.

The compact design also enables integration into higher-level systems such as pneumatically operated process valves or slide valves. This makes them perfect for use as pilot valves.

Good to Know!

What is a Pilot Valve?

A pilot valve is a type of valve used to control the operation of a larger main valve or another type of valve or system. It is also known as a control or auxiliary valve. Pilot valves use a smaller control force to actuate a larger force. These valves are particularly useful in applications where precise control and quick response are required.

How Does a Pilot Valve Work?

A pilot valve works by using a smaller control force to actuate a larger force and thus control a main valve or another type of control mechanism. The operation varies depending on the type of pilot valve, but the basic principles can be summarized as follows.

Pilot Pressure

A small control pressure, known as the pilot pressure, is applied to the pilot valve. This pilot pressure is used to actuate an internal control chamber within the pilot valve.

Valve Position

The pilot pressure moves a small diaphragm, piston, or other control mechanism within the pilot valve. This movement opens or closes a passageway in the pilot valve.

Main Valve Control

The change in the passageway in the pilot valve affects the pressure or flow to a control chamber of the main valve. This control chamber then acts on a larger diaphragm or piston in the main valve, causing it to open or close.

Advantages of Pilot Valves?

Pilot valves allow larger main valves to be controlled with significantly lower electrical power than a comparable direct-operated valve. With a suitable main valve, the contact of the medium with moving parts like anchors and springs can also be separated. They can also be used in various systems, including pneumatic, gas, and steam systems, without direct contact with the medium.

Additionally, STAIGER pilot valves offer the following advantages:

  • High Repeatability:
They can control the desired flow rate with high precision and repeatability, which is crucial in many applications.

  • 100% Calibration:
STAIGER proportional valves are 100% automatically adjusted and calibrated to customer specifications.

  • Very High Switching Dynamics:
Due to the special and lightweight anchor design, the valves switch in the millisecond range despite media separation, making them suitable for highly dynamic applications and the smallest dosing quantities.

  • Compact Design:
The compact design is suitable for a very compact arrangement of the valves next to each other. Thus, common grid dimensions in the field of microfluidics can be implemented and even undercut.

Overall, STAIGER media-separated valves are an excellent choice when it comes to precise control of flow rates or pressures in various applications, especially when the above advantages are of high importance.

Application Areas

Pilot valves play a crucial role in many industrial processes as they enable precise and reliable control. Common applications include industrial machinery, automation systems, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, and various types of process control systems.
